| North Legends on show in Benalla |
On Saturday March 8th 2008, notable former North Melbourne greats came out of retirement to play in a practice match between Goulburn Valley Football League rivals Benalla and Tatura, at Benalla Showgrounds.
Taking the field for Benalla were Glenn Archer, recently retired shinboner of the century, along with Benalla's Anthony Stephens. Stephen Hickey of Sports Addiction, Mark Porter and Leigh Colbert also donned the red, white and black.
North legends playing for Tatura were Mick Martin, Martin Pike, Corey McKernan and David King.
Between them, these former Kangaroo greats have collected 12 premiership medals, played more than 2250 games and kicked over 1250 goals.
Benalla has a strong connection with North Melbourne as Benalla, who then played in the Ovens & Murray League, was part of the North Melbourne recruiting zone.
The game was a great opportunity for young players from both the Benalla Saints and the Tatura Bulldogs to play alongside some of the greats of the AFL.
Dennis Pagan, dual North Melbourne premiership coach, was also in Benalla to attend a sportsman's night on Saturday evening.
Benalla Saints kicked 16.9 - 105 points defeating Tatura Bulldogs 6.4 - 40 points.
